{"id":1707,"date":"2020-08-03T12:15:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-03T10:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test-repaireu.rstrt.org\/?p=1707"},"modified":"2020-10-15T10:32:44","modified_gmt":"2020-10-15T08:32:44","slug":"apples-internal-emails-prove-theyre-conflicted-about-repair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test-repaireu.rstrt.org\/ca\/news\/apples-internal-emails-prove-theyre-conflicted-about-repair\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple\u2019s internal emails prove they\u2019re conflicted about repair"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At the request of the House Judiciary Committee, Apple turned over last week internal communications on the \u201cRight to Repair\u201d\u2014revealing Apple\u2019s seemingly united position on repair is really an internal debate, rife with uncertainty.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, while Apple continued to aggressively sue a one-man repair shop all the way to Norway\u2019s Supreme Court and fight Right to Repair bills across the US, company emails reveal more divisions than we could have guessed. In one memo from March 2019, Apple\u2019s Director of Corporate Communications asks, \u201cWhat\u2019s our repair strategy?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She goes on to ask \u201cDo we believe it&#8217;s important to get ahead of any additional regulations about repair options in Europe&#8230;?\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"446\" src=\"https:\/\/test-repaireu.rstrt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/apple_email_thinner_border-1024x446.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test-repaireu.rstrt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/apple_email_thinner_border-1024x446.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/test-repaireu.rstrt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/apple_email_thinner_border-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/test-repaireu.rstrt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/apple_email_thinner_border-768x335.jpg 768w, https:\/\/test-repaireu.rstrt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/apple_email_thinner_border.jpg 1436w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re not surprised. We knew the industry and Apple had been lobbying behind the scenes in Brussels against Right to Repair regulations. This is why we launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/test-repaireu.rstrt.org\/smartphones\/\">#LongLiveMyPhone campaign <\/a>and petition earlier this year which has reached more than 26.000 signatures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it seems the European Commission is listening. As European Right to Repair member Ernestas Oldyrevas puts it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;After hesitation, the European Commission is taking steps to make our smartphones last longer and be easier to repair. An exploratory study underway this year will pave the way for a whole set of ambitious new requirements on more environmentally-friendly design of smartphones. Meanwhile, rules on battery replaceability \u2013 not only of smartphones but also other electronic devices \u2013 are expected in October.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-right is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Apple may be confused about repair, but we are clear: only good regulation can ensure longer-lasting, repairable smartphones and computers. We suggest Apple accept that it&#8217;s going to happen and plan accordingly.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Read our member Ifixit&#8217;s analysis and the original emails <a
